With the age thing, teenage characters are very rarely played by teenage actors, so it's sort of unrealistic to expect that. These are really big movies and great parts for her to just be sailing by on luck alone, and she's not really so gorgeous (not by Hollywood's ridiculous standards, I mean) that it could be just her looks.

She got cast in Divergent and the Fault in Our Stars, so I just think she has to have some talent. If she was really that bad of an actress, she wouldn't have landed a role in such a serious movie like that. Shailene was good in the Descendants, which is where I know her from, and that movie was nominated for a ton of oscars and she acted alongside George Clooney.

Divergent is a major motion picture, so it's a completely different kind of acting and production altogether. Actresses get better over time, for one thing, and for another, that was just some ABC Family original series, which, besides the acting, probably wasn't that well written or directed in the first place. I never watched Secret Life of an American Teenager, but I would venture to say that's not necessarily a fair judgement of Shailene's acting skills. Well, the thing is, it's really difficult to find someone who's short, blonde, 'skinny' (can I just throw it out there that I think the people calling her 'chubby' are insane? Shailene is thin/average, and she's not muscular or anything, and I think that's the important thing about Tris' appearance, that she doesn't look like someone who would be beating people up, and Shailene doesn't really look that way at all), who can act the part, AND who happened to try out for the role (or have their agent get them an audition or however it works).
